ブータンを統一した現王家の初代国王ウゲン・ワンチュクはトンサのペン・ロップ（領主）であった。王位継承者はトンサ・ペンロップ（正式にはチュツェ・ペンロップと呼ばれる）の称号を得て名実ともに王位継承者となる。トンサ・ゾンは、東西への交通路と南北への交通路が交差する重要な位置にあり、ゾンの中には関所が設けられており。旅人はここを通って行き来した。

TRONGSA Dzongkhag (1,800ｋｍ2 )
…is the Dzongkhag where the Royal Family comes from. The first King, Ugen Wangchuck was the Penlop (lord) of this Dzongkhag. Therefore, every single crown prince has to be designated as Trongsa Penlop (also called Tshuche Penlop) to be recognized as a crown prince formally.
Geographically, Trongsa dzong is also important, situated where the south- north road and the west-east road meet. Consequently, most of the people travelled through this barrier.
